Home Remodeling Chronicles: Main Bathroom

We purchased our home in March of 2014 it was a large home in the neighborhood in which we wanted to live. This is a cute neighborhood full of homes built in the 50’s and 60’s. We purchased a 1950’s Ranch Home. We moved from 30 minutes outside of town to the center of a small town literally within walking distance to a small Grocery Store Wal-Mart. LOVE!!!!

Previously , however, we had  always lived in BRAND NEW HOMES so we had no idea what to expect from our new Ranch home. What was important to me was that it was a much bigger house (1900 square feet vs 1500 square feet) and most of the living space was in the Kitchen, Family Room & Dining Room the bedrooms are VERY small.  So the living areas in the house feels like it’s about 2500 square feet.

The original faucets

Shortly after we moved in we realized there was some sort of problem with the tub/bathroom and that water was leaking outside of the house from the bathroom. This is BAD, REALLY BAD! (I thought it was time to rip out the tub and fix the leak bad). But we had a plummer come and check it out and it wasn’t as bad as I thought, the tub needed to be re-caulked and all the knobs on the tub needed to re-caulked.

We decided that since he had to recaulk everything and we are not planning a major bathroom remodel anytime soon  but we did decide that we would go ahead and replace the very dated fixtures. So this is a tour of the improvements we’ve made to the main bathroom thus far.

When Remodeling Problems…

The matching tub faucets

The latest in our house chronicles….. when we moved into the house we realized the tub was leaking from the inside of the house down the wall on the outside of the house. We had a plummer come and look at it and he informed us it was not as bad as I thought. that we needed to replace the caulk and fix the tub faucet and handles because as it was each time we took a shower water dripped down the side of the tub. However, now Wayne has finished caulking , fixing the tub and upgrading the hardware. and what we found boggles the mind
1. The overflow tube was too long and did not line up with the overflow drain
2. The overflow washer was missing along with the plunger
3. The washer for the waste shoe was missing.
So what this means is any time the the bathtub filled up to the overflow drain the water would fall down the side of the tub into the flooring and wall of the house since that tube wasn’t connected correctly. So probably for many years the tub has been draining onto the subfloor. Whoever originally plummed this house or the plummer who put in the tub really messed it up. The good news is if we are every able to add on the Master Suite Wayne now knows, in detail, how to install the sink & tub.
Also while we were working on the bathroom we decided to update the faucets much to my delight.
