We are in the Grammar Stage ( Early Knowledge/Later Knowledge levels from Teaching the Trivium)  also known as the Grammar Stage.“The Knowledge Level is the observation level of science. Provide your child wit time, the tools and the opportunities for experimental observation and exploration.”   Teaching the Trivium pa 382

Around here we use Answer’s in Genesis’ God’s Design for Science as the spine of our science curriculum and this year we are working our way through their Heaven & Earth Series. We really enjoy the deep quick Mama friendly lesson and science projects. I plan field trips and we watch documentaries all centered on the curriculum and we’ve even held a Mad Science themed Birthday party all in an effort to  immerse the children in the subjects we are exploring.

Incorporate Living Books into the  Study of Science

One of the suggestions from the Bluedorns was to “Require the child to read something every day touching on science or nature. The Library may have useful materials here or you can purchase some of the nature readers from Christian Liberty [Press] or creation science materials…” Teaching the Trivium pa 382

Answers in Genesis does have a short list of suggested reading included in their curriculum. But I wanted a more expansive list of books from which my children could choose as we study Heaven & Earth this year.  We have really enjoyed some great books this year my 3rd grader really enjoyed reading Starry Messenger about Galileo Galilei by Peter Sis while we were studying astronomy. I am looking forward to reading Rocks in His Heads to my children and the ones at our little History/Science/Art Co-op as we explore geology. When teaching kiddos at this level I’ve often really remember the books we read together. Because we not have a lot of time to  read aloud in our homeschool, I try to be very purposeful in the books that I bring into the house. Again, remember I am trying to immerse them in a subjects we are learning. Then if they show an interest in something I really want to load up on books on that topic so they can explore it.  If they could care less ten it might be time to load up on some historical novels. I’d encourage you to fan to fan the fires of learning with living books.

Right now I have a free printable of 50+ living science books that I have compiled available to subscribers! I sure hope you find it as helpful as I have.

  1. Great ideas! I don’t homeschool my son but I do try to read him because it is so good for language skills, general knowledge and, well, everything. And it’s our special moment at night when he can tell me everything that bothers him.

  2. Great post. My children go to a charter school, but a huge influence at the school focuses on parent involvement and so I love finding posts and lists with educational information like this. Thanks for sharing!
