We started this series on the Frugal pizza last week with our frugal dough. This week here is my Frugal Pizza Sauce recipe which is sure to satisfy all of your pizza lovers.
Ingredients for Frugal Pizza Sauce
- 1 (15 ounce) can of tomato sauce
- 1 can tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon ground oregano
- 1 1/2 teaspoons of minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon ground paprika
- 1 tablespoon basil
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Instructions for Frugal Pizza Sauce
Mix all of these together in a bowl. Then put it on the pizza with your other toppings. Now as far as the toppings go we normally use pepperonis (1/4 bag per pizza), Italian sausage (1/2 # for 2 pizzas) one of the things I do is buy larger cans of lives or mushrooms when I need them for another recipe and then use them on the pizza.
Saving Money on the Ingredients
As always I am touting the benefits of bulk purchases. But this time it’s the spices that I am going to focus on at Sams Club where I can purchase 15 oz for $5.88 instead of 1-2 ounces for $2.42! We also buy a huge can of Tomato Sauce at Sam’s club for about $2.32 . By carefully purchasing your ingredients you can save even more!
Using Leftovers for Toppings
I also check the fridge for leftovers that can be added to the pizza. Now for me this isn’t like leftover fridge soup where you can just add the medley of randomness you find in the fridge to your pizza. I am generally looking for specific left overs because, I am not willing to eat pea pizza (etc…) no matter how inexpensive! I look for leftover pieces of meat such as chicken or ground beef, veggies like red onion or green peppers and little random bits of cheese leftover from recipes. This provides both variety and it allows me to use up my left overs in a super tasty and thoughtful way. Because remember as a frugalista I want to ‘use it up’!
